Travel Destinations

Maldives is the new Mumbai, but why is it Bollywood’s favourite travel destination?

Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria were recently in Maldives.

The ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown enforced to control it ensured that nobody was travelling abroad. Pretty much everyone spent the initial months of 2020 locked in indoors. But after the government lifted travel restrictions as a part of Unlock 5.0, we spotted several celebrities jetting off to Maldives for a short vacation. In the last couple of weeks, a slew of Bollywood celebrities have been sharing continual updates from their vacation in the island country on Instagram and this has left people wondering, why is everyone heading to the Maldives?

INDIA’S AIR BUBBLE ARRANGEMENT WITH MALDIVES

Air bubble or transport bubble is an arrangement between two countries to restart passenger flights to and from the nations, whicg had to be stopped due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. India and Maldives entered into an air bubble arrangement like several other countries, as a part of which natives from these nations can travel to and from the countries for employment, tourism, medical emergencies, etc. The passengers travelling have to follow proper guidelines issued by the governments of these countries. To enter the Maldives, one needs a mandatory Covid-19 test done from a laboratory listed under ICMR.

PERFECT TIME TO VISIT THE MALDIVES

One important reason why a lot of people are currently travelling to the Maldives is the weather there at this point. November to April – this is the perfect time to visit the island country. The average temperature there is between 29°C to 31°C during this period, making it the ideal holiday destination. Rainfall during this time is minimal and the humidity is very low between January and April.

WHY MALDIVES IS THE BEST HOLIDAY DESTINATION FOR INDIAN PASSPORT HOLDERS

The Maldives is an archipelago with over 1,190 coral islands which provide for natural isolation for those travelling to the country. The resorts and other tourism establishments follow proper guidelines provided by the Ministry of Tourism, thereby maintaining safety and hygiene standards. The islands follow the concept of “one-island-one-resort” under which travellers visiting Maldives are confined to the resort they are staying in. This makes the experience safer in comparison to other places. Quarantine upon reaching the Maldives is not required. Indian passport holders are granted a 30-day free visa upon arrival.

BOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE TRAVELLED TO THE MALDIVES SO FAR

Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani, Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Aadar Jain, Elli EvrRam, Varun Dhawan, Tapsee Pannu, Rakul Preet Singh, Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia have visited the island country recently. Even Kajal Aggarwal and Gautam Kitchlu headed there for their honeymoon. The actors shared mesmerising photos from their beach vacation on their respective social media handles.

Currently, Sonakshi Sinha, Sophie Choudry, Armaan Jain and wife Anissa Malhotra are enjoying their time in the Maldives. If you happen to check their Instagram handles, you will be witness to the fun time they are having there, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

So while most of Bollywood has taken off to the Maldives for breaks ranging from Diwali, to honeymoon, to anniversaries and birthdays, it has not been without a considerable number of raised eyebrows. Filmmaker Nikhil Dwivedi recently called out the tone-deafness of celebrities posting sun-kissed photos while Covid cases are rising in the country.
