Most chefs will tell you that the eye is the pathway to the stomach.  That is food looks attractive, then hunger will follow.

In Singapore, they’ve knocked that concept on the head in a new restaurant called NOX – Dine in the Dark.

There is one important, yet significant, difference between NOX and every other restaurant in Singapore. That is, you can’t see what you are eating. The restaurant is pitch black, with no ambient light whatsoever.

The waitstaff are vision impaired and they literally lead diners to their table by having them hold their shoulders and moving carefully behind the waitstaff,

The idea is to guess what you are eating, and with one very important sense, that of sight, denied you.  Figuring out what you are eating can be a real challenge.

You don’t order.  Your meal is chosen for you.  Prior to visiting you notify the restaurant of any allergies and of things you dislike eating, then the chefs plate up and each diner has to guess what it is they are eating.

It is best to visit NOX as part of a group, because the conversation can become vibrant as each diner tries to work out what they are eating.

NOX Management say “We want people to really enjoy food as it should be. As guests are unable to see in the dining area, their other senses are in turn heightened.”

People are generally very driven by their sight in almost all circumstances. The main difference between it and other restaurants is that when you are dining at NOX – Dine In The Dark, you get to fully focus on the taste, smell, texture and sound around you. These are sometimes, if not most of the times, lost in a ‘normal’ restaurant or dining settings.

NOX would also want their guests to leave the dining area feeling humbled and inspired after learning more from the visually impaired hosts, plus inspire guests to have an overwhelming appreciation for their own sense of sight.
